New York, this week

David Zwirner · 537 W. 20th St and 519 W. 19th St, Chelsea

Yoshitomo Nara

Opens Thursday, November 5 · Reception 6 to 8 pm · Through December 12

New paintings and large-format oil-stick drawings fill the 20th Street space, and thirteen white bronze heads, ten-times enlargements of palm-sized clay prototypes, hold 19th Street. The new canvases turn muted and atmospheric; the figures’ tear-filled eyes do the rest. Thursday’s opening reception is free and open to the public. Pairs with Sentinels of Stillness at the Hirshhorn in Washington, DC.

The Noguchi Museum · Long Island City, Queens

No Ordinary Light: Akari at 75

Opens Wednesday, November 4 · Through September 5, 2027

Seventy-five years of Isamu Noguchi’s paper-and-bamboo light sculptures, first made on a 1951 visit to Gifu, Japan, and expanded into more than two hundred models over three decades. Collapsible, electric, weightless: Noguchi called them luminous sculptures and insisted Akari is no ordinary light. The museum makes the case slowly, and the show runs through September 2027.

Stoffer sews her paintings: she dyes her own yarn, pulls it straight through the linen, works the surface from both sides, then pulls threads out again and leaves the holes standing. Tiny paper-clay pins, sculpted by hand and painted with gouache, puncture the canvas like punctuation and steer the eye. Oil paint, pastel, collage and cut linen get pinned, moved and tested until they stay. The title is the thesis: night is not where color disappears, it is what carries it. Full disclosure: Good Mother Gallery and ICA America share a founder. The material intelligence is real, and no two surfaces behave alike.

Luis De Jesus · 1110 Mateo St, Arts District

Kim Garcia: a trace is not a map to you

Opens Saturday, November 7 · Reception 4 to 7 pm · On view through December

A debut solo with the gallery, and a worldbuilder’s show. Garcia etches drawings and seals family photographs, heirloom jewelry chains and historical clippings inside luminous resin, a material that preserves and distorts at once. The work starts at home: caring for her father through dementia, and his longing for a Philippines he left more than forty years ago, sent her tracing family history back to the Spanish-American War and onto her first adult trip to the islands. Friezes, ornaments and freestanding screens come out of it, thresholds between two places.

MASH Gallery · 812 N. La Cienega Blvd, West Hollywood

Maggi Hodge: Terra, Aqua, Astra

Opens Saturday, November 7 · Reception 6 to 9 pm · Through December 19

Forty new paintings in Maggi Hodge’s third solo at Haleh Mashian’s gallery on La Cienega. Non-objective abstraction carried by color and gesture: violet and cobalt tumbling across ochre and black, clusters of saturated dots, scratched lines rising through layered surfaces. Some canvases glow in jewel tones, others settle into deep green and tarnished gold. The gallery hears Joan Mitchell in the charge of the paint. We would just say it rewards a second lap.

LAND · Old Fire Station #6, 534 E. Edgeware Rd, Angelino Heights

Angela Anh Nguyen: ENTROPY

Opens Saturday, November 7 · Through December 13 · Opening RSVP via LAND

The weekend’s most site-specific outing, from a 2026 Mohn LAND grantee. Angela Anh Nguyen takes on the collective experience of the 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires, one most of us lived through social media and monitoring apps. Interlinking tufted rugs encased in vinyl spell ENTROPY across the exterior of Old Fire Station #6, with a zine of regional contributions alongside.
